The web is the most important communications tool in business today.
2008-06-13
There was a time when a website was a "nice-to" for entrepreneurs. But today it has become a "must-have" for companies
"The web is the most important communications tool in business today. Your website basically replaces your business card. Not only does it reflect your company image, it's also an ideal way to communicate with your prospects and customers,". A small percentage of business owners have garnered some invaluable experience with building a strong web presence over the past years. However, many entrepreneurs are still falling behind, he contends.
"This particularly applies to companies that got into business before the internet existed. Many people think it's enough to work with a basic template, hastily put up a website and let it sit there unattended. But that's exactly what you shouldn't be doing," whit emphasizes.
Change your content constantly
For Kamicode, one of the key factors for success when building a website is developing strong content that is updated regularly and adds value for visitors.
"Whatever business you're in, there's always something new to communicate on your site," he stresses. Entrepreneurs may worry that they lack content but all they have to do is tap into their day-to-day business activities to find it," "For example, if your company is attending a conference, you could post an invitation to clients to visit your booth. You could regularly put up customer success stories or testimonials from employees. Or, write news briefs on specific activities such as the launch of a product. Whatever you do, be creative about it.
Create accountability for content
Kamicode suggests that entrepreneurs assign somebody to take care of web content unless they have the means to outsource it. "Avoid having too many players working on content. Be sure that you have one person who is gathering content from various contributors. This will help you create uniformity and a consistent tone. After all, your site reflects your corporate image and is a precious asset. -
35 Designers x 5 Questions
2008-02-26
The initial part of the design process is probably the most creative and sophisticated part of web-development. First sketches, first layouts, first typography and color decisions - sometimes it appears that there are simply too many things to keep in mind - but also too many things left out by mistake in the final design. Yet there have to be the most important ones. Design aspects you, being a professional web-developer, give - or should give - the highest priority to; the ones that make or break a web-site.

Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more.
2007-12-09
The term "Web 2.0" refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that aims to facilitate communication, secure information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and applications such as social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies.
The term first became notable after the Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to changes in the ways software developers and end-users utilize the Web. According to Tim O'Reilly:
“ Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform. ”
O'Reilly has said that the "2.0" refers to the historical context of web businesses "coming back" after the 2001 collapse of the dot-com bubble, in addition to the distinguishing characteristics of the projects that survived the bust or thrived thereafter.
Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, has questioned whether one can use the term in any meaningful way, since many of the technological components of Web 2.0 have existed since the early days of the Web.Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just retrieve information. They can build on the interactive facilities of "Web 1.0" to provide "Network as platform" computing, allowing users to run software-applications entirely through a browser. Users can own the data on a Web 2.0 site and exercise control over that data. These sites may have an "Architecture of participation" that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it. This stands in contrast to very old traditional websites, the sort which limited visitors to viewing and whose content only the site's owner could modify. Web 2.0 sites often feature a rich, user friendly interface based on Ajax, OpenLaszlo, Flex or similar rich media.

How to cost out your ebusiness efforts.
2007-12-09
Costing out your ebusiness project needs will help you get it off the ground successfully. Particularly important is ensuring that you're spending wisely and considering all of your options. As well, you don't want to find yourself with hidden costs down the road. Be certain that you've gone over everything in detail and included all possible expenses.
The architecture
Be prepared to invest time and money in creating a well-designed and effective website. There is an art to guiding viewers through a website, generally termed as "usability", which simply means how easy it is for website visitors to move around the site. Usability can affect traffic and effectiveness.
Put yourself in the place of people visiting your site.- Can they find what they are looking for within 3 clicks?
- Is the purpose of the site clear to any visitor immediately?
- Are the fancy and distracting graphics kept to a minimum?
- Is your site overpowered by content and graphics?
Blatant sales pitches and demands for personal information at every turn usually force visitors to abandon a site quickly.
If your website is complex or central to your business, it's worth spending a few thousand dollars on a site designer who can organize the site's architecture.
